Ag in the Classroom
Classroom Presentations

Would you like the Vermilion County Farm Bureau Ag Literacy Coordinator to come to your classroom to teach on subjects related to agriculture? Your students will learn how agriculture affects their lives on a daily basis. Presentations may include: Powerpoint presentations, DVDs, videos, hands-on activities, and games. Presentations my be scheduled by attending the Teacher Open House on August 29th from 4-7 pm or August 30th from 4-5 pm or my calling the Vermilion County Farm Bureau at 442-8713 or by sending an email: aitc.vcfb@comcast.net.

October - Pigs

There is more to pigs than pork chops. Students will be surprised to learn how many products come from pigs. This lesson will showcase pigs, pork, and by-products.

November - The Legend of the Three Sisters
According to Native American legend, corn, beans and squash are inseparable sisters who grow and thrive together. Learn how Native Americans planted in mounds and how farmers plant today. Students will make a tambourine.

February - Water Cycle
This lesson will show students of all ages how the water cycle works. Students will create a water cycle in a bag. Without water, we would not have agriculture.

January - The Scoop on Poop
How do animals convert food and what happens with all their poop? Students will learn the difference between monogastric and ruminant animals. We will discuss how farmers deal with waste management and how the least talked about by-product is good for the environment.

March - Ladybugs and Other Helpful Insects
Your class will explore how insects grow and change through their life cycle and how many insects are beneficial to farmers. We will discuss characteristics of a good bug and complete a hands-on activity.

April - Growing a Hand
Students will learn to sort and recognize different shapes and sizes of seeds. They will create a seed sprouting pattern in the shape of their hand and be able to examine and record plant growth.

Special Topics Available Upon Request
Maybe you have planned a field trip to a dairy farm, maybe your reading book has a story about horses,maybe your school is celebrating something and you need a special topic. Please contact the Ag Literacy Coordinator to do a special presentation about your agricultural topic. Email your date and topic to: aitc.vcfb@comcast.net.
